Change of ownership

Hallo everyone, this is just to confirm all the rumours, that we have sold the Tavern to Paul and Chris who are in the process of a rather large refit. The Tavern is closed at the moment and should reopen for the beginning of February, when all the dust has settled and the new paint has dried.
We will still be here in Lagos and you can still meet us in The Old Tavern but this time, as customers.
We wish Paul and Chris good fortune and fun together with new and old customers.

End of an era

It has come to pass that very quickly and sadly that the Old Tavern has been sold and Mike and Marilyn have handed over the bar to Paul and Chris. Now I know both very well and will still be working at the OT.

It is an end of an era and M & M will be missed by a great number of people both local and tourists they had a army of loyal visitors every year. I for one will miss working for them as I believe we made a good team.

As I have said I know Paul and Chris from both here in Lagos and when I used to have bars in England, they have great personality and drive to succeed and I believe will do well and keep the Old Tavern at the pinnacle of Lagos Bars.

All the best whatever you decide to do M & M.

Of course life carries on and keep an eye here for future postings on the life of the Old Tavern and hope to see you soon

November Holiday

Mike and Marilyn are on holiday till 20th November but I am still here Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm to keep the home fires burning and the beer flowing. Dont forget that the world cup qualfiers are on Saturday 14th and Wednesday the 18th Can Ireland and Portugal make it for the 2010 World Cup.

World Super Bikes come to town

The temperature has just dropped a couple of degrees outside during the day, but The Old Tavern is still nice and cosy with it's traditional warm welcome to one and all. We are expecting an extra rush this weekend, due to the arrival of World Super-bike fans and lovers of two wheeled speed coming to this part of the World to enjoy the last WSB race of the season at our new, fantastic Algarve Race Track, which is just 11 Km´s from Lagos. Will it be Haga or Spies crowned world champion? The excitement is mounting. Our Happy Hour prices and Special Drinks deals are still on all night and we are only too happy to make you feel at home. If you need any information reference the track or the racing, pop in and say hallo and we will answer any of your queries.

Moving into Autumn or Fall

Football is still on..... cocktails still on...... superbock still on....

yes we are still having a great time here at the Old Tavern, it might be getting cooler on a night here in town but the hottest place to be is the Old Tavern. We are still busy and still providing great atomsphere. We play the best footie games on our big screen and after nine we still have a party with our mojitos.

What I am saying is that although summers is over we at the Old Tavern will be with you until the New Year (and yes New Years Eve is a time to visit Lagos and us).

Summers Over !!!

With a whizz and a bang Lagos announced with a beach party and fireworks that summer is over on August 29th. Well the weather still great and the Old tavern is still the place to come and either chat over a beer or go back in time with some classic music.

Open till the fireworks of New Year fizzle away, then a well deserved break for the good people of this bar in January. The Old tavern will go into the Autumn (or Fall if you are North American) with more great offers and sport on TV.

The the months of September and October are busy enough to create atomsphere but we have time to get to know you and over a Superbock or a Cocktail you know that when you visit the Old Tavern a good time is guaranteed.

With our mega screen and great drink deals you should get down to The Old Tavern for your football fix. We have confirmed out subscription to ESPN as well as Sky for full coverage and we start this Saturday 15th with Arsenal at Everton at 5.30pm also later on in the evening (8pm) you can watch German football whilst enjoying a cocktail and listening to some great music.

Next Tuesday is also a big British clash in the Champions League as Arsenal this time take on Celtic at 7.45pm with a large beer only 2 euros get down early.....

and later in the evening on Saturday night we show Match of the day and now the new Football league show so some footie drinks and great music you know where to go.

Summer attractions

So the summer is now in full swing with people arriving at The Old Tavern from all over Europe and Northern Portugal. We are still running all those devil may care special offers, well into the night. During the evening Peter is doing an incredible amount of home made Smoothies. Just what you need after a hot, sweaty day at the beach. Very popular with all ages and the kid's just love them to bits. During the night the choice of drink swings in favour of Marilyn's fantastic jugs of frozen Daiquiri's and if that cools you down too much, then you can always get going again with one or two of our specially priced Shots from an extremely long list.
Our thanks to our friends from the north of Portugal demonstrating how to have a good time in The Old Tavern and yes, we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Need your update on the Ashes when you come off the beach then from around 7pm we show the highlights of the day from Channel Five.

Of course this is subject to the rain but then again if it rains all the time during the ashes, England will win the series and the little trophy. So some good will come out of the bad weather. We here at the tavern have british beer in cans Boddington or John Smiths and VB for the Aussies

Now it's almost the end of July and the heat has certainly arrived in the streets. The sun is working it's magic on pale skinned arrivals and everyone is having fun long into the night. People come in to The Old Tavern on their first evening out, returning all through their holiday and we get to see the tan evolve whilst they have a really good bash at tasting what The Tavern has to offer. Cocktails, Shots and Beers galore from all over the place, at really affordable prices plus the impeccable service and music is totally free. Even people like Patrick and the delectable Berit, together with all their friends from frozen Norway, have been trying to work through one of the longest lists of drinks you will ever find in Lagos. They had to go home defeated in their effort as their holiday was not long enough , but will return like so many other of our friendly and happy guests of The Old Tavern. Just like Patrick and company, we always look forward to seeing you again. Don't wait too long to come through our doors.

Early Doors and How many bottles?

Hello Peter here again, the early doors personnel.

Its getting busy now as July is here so here at The Old Tavern the early doors or pre dinner drink till 9pm is becoming a great time for a cooling drink and a chat.

The talk of the moment is not of the MJ story or of sport although we always have the scores to hand in the ashes. It is 'does the Old tavern have more spirits on sale than anyone else' A regular came on holiday this week and donated a bottle of Woods 100 Rum to take our stock to 145 different brands of spirits. We as the famous lager advertisement said 'have the largest number probably in the Algarve. So I am sure that you will find something you like.

So sit around the bar have a cooling drink (remember a large Superbock only 2 euro.) and count our bottles if I get too boring for you!!!!

Hot Weather and Bikers

July is a very good month for anyone to visit The Algarve. Great beaches, stunning scenery, friendly people and an unending choice of restaurants and bars. The jewel of towns has to be Lagos, with it's narrow cobblestone streets and lanes leading to new adventurous discoveries round every corner. luckily The Old Tavern is pretty easy to find at any time of day and night and the staff are only too willing to help you with any queries you may have on where to eat and what to do. Not only do we get families, couples, golf groups and happy go lucky people coming into our parlour all the time, we also get two wheeled travellers popping in to say hallo and enjoying our hospitality.
This month it is The Faro Motorcycle Club's annual get together between the 16th. and the 19th. It's rated as the largest motorbike meeting in Europe, with over 25000 bikers turning up from all over the place. Even Norwegians and Italiens make it a must do destination. Brit's, Germans, Dutch, Spanish, you name it they are here in the Algarve. All wanting a good time, just like anyone else and as we are also bikers at The Old Tavern and know the local roads like the back of our hands, all bikers are welcome to come in for an update on the best roads to take for a nice ride out. Lagos is also only 11 Kilometres from the new Parkalgar Autodromo, otherwise known as The Algarve Race Track, which not only hosts professional races but also has various Track Days specifically organised for motor bikes.
So , feel free to visit us at The Old Tavern for a nice cool drink and a chin wag just like Nick and Kev did together with Claire. They are Harley riders and proud of it.

Parched Ozzies find Paradise

June has proven to be a very hot and thirsty month. Loads of sunburned bodies looking to be cooled from both sides of the skin. Factor 118 doesn't really work from the inside, but a cool pull of the amber nectar does. Even visitors from Down Under beat a hasty retreat to The Old Taverns Door to shelter from the heat and sample just one of the many exotic drinks available, that remind you of home. No tears guys, remember your Australians! The only thing missing is a shot of Bundy and coke. Maybe next month, if the supply wagon gets through.
The summer season has started with a vengeance, our »Slushies« are selling really well and as for the jugs of fresh fruit frozen Daiquiri's, well we've had to bring in an extra mixer to keep up with demand.
Whatever your taste buds might fancy, this hot and sun kissed summer, fear not intrepid traveller and holiday maker, The Old Tavern will be able to quench them all.

What do you do?

So hello blog readers, Mike and Marilyn have sent me a permission to contribute to the blog. What have they done? Well I am Peter the early doors person and I am here to invite you to join me. Opening at 5.30pm sometimes earlier if there is a sports event on (keep up with the blog here to found out when that is).

A more relaxing time than later in the evening, I show the latest current events from BBC News at six so if you need to know which MP has his fingers in the till today Old Tavern will let you know. Oh yes and we sell a large beer at 2 euro. After the news the music goes on and the conversations start I like a good chin wag so lets talk about the weather, the city of Lagos, the exchange rate and get to know you.

After coming off the beach need something refreshing try our Fruit smoothies at 2.50 a glass, made with real fruit it helps you reach your five day and cool you down.

As I said we show the big sports events on our very large screen its probably the biggest in town and apparently according to one review I am a Manchester United fan so lets talk footie then.

Then at Nine the lights go down the music goes up I go home and the party can start without me the fun staff come on but I will probably be back later in the evening this time as a customer enjoying the Lagos Legend that is the Old Tavern.

England Football World Cup Qualifiers

Well, we thought it was all over but not quite yet. On Saturday the 6th. of June which happens to be the same date as the Normandy Beach Landings of 1944, England fights again. This time it's on the soccer field against Kazakhstan. So England expects every man to do his duty and strike hard in scoring goals.
Two very important matches for England, that have to be won to insure entry to the next round.
Saturday it's against Kazakhstan, then on Wednesday, the 10th. of June we commence battle with Andorra.
You can see both games live at The Old Tavern on our large projector screen and enjoy the fight for future World Cup glory, together with a non stop flow of your favourite tipple to help ease the tension.
Saturday's kick off is in the afternoon with the following Wednesdays game in the evening. Remember to come early, as we always have a good crowd.

F.A. Cup Final

Tomorrow, Saturday the 30th. , is another huge get together for football supporters at The Old Tavern. This time it will be for the F.A. Cup Final at Wembley Stadium London, between Chelsea and Everton. Kick Off is at 15:00 so we will be opening earlier than normal.
Happy Hour prices will be running as you watch the match on our large projector screen.
Will it be a win for the North of England or the South? Join Peter, who is a staunch Chelsea supporter, and one of our regulars.

Hallo again everyone. Well we certainly have a busy couple of weeks ahead of us in The Old Tavern. Not only with new guests coming in on a daily basis, also the Sport Calendar is certainly full.
Rugby fever has arrived.
Saturday May 16th.
Guinness Premiership Final at Twickenham Stadium, Kick-off at 17:30 between
London Irish and Leicester Tigers.
